THE
UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES
The United States
joined WWII after the Japanese surprise attack on the US naval base at Pearl
Harbour in December 1941. The
attack caught the US forces by surprise - outnumbered and isolated, the US
forces in the Pacific fell to the Japanese.
By mid 1942, the US were able to hold and push the Japanese onto the defensive. This gave the US the initiative in the Pacific which they kept till the end of the war.
The US Armed forces was a large component of the Allies and they were part of the forces that took North Africa, Italy, the D-Day landings and the campaign against Japan and her allies in the Pacific.
By the end of the war there were almost 13 million Americans in uniform, with over 8 million of them being soldiers.
