THE RED ARMY
At the time of the German assualt on Russia in June 1941, the Red Army's ground forces consisted of 303 divisions and 22 brigades (4.8 million troops). The first few weeks of the campaign saw major Soviet loses as German forces trapped hundreds of thousands of Russina troops in huge encirclements - which resulted in the loss of tanks, artillery and other equipment.

To improve the morale of the retreating troops, Soviet propaganda invoked patriotic feelings of the population - embracing pre-revolutionary Russian history. It also turned away form the politcal notion of class struggle and re-intorduced military ranks and the use of medals and orders as forms of distinction.

By the end of WWII, the Red Army was the most powerful land army in history, with more tanks, artillery and infantry as well as a large number of experienced commanders and staff.
