THE
WEHRMACHT
After WWI ended
the German armed forces were dubbed the Friedensheer (peace army) in January
1919. By 1922 Germany was covertly flouting the terms of the Treaty of Versailles
and was in secret collaboration with the Soviet Union.
The collaboration
involved Germany helping the Soviets with industrialisation and the training
of Soviet officers. German tank and air force specialists could also train
in the Soviet Union along with other projects.
By 1935 Germany
was openly flouting the Versailles Treaty and reintroduced conscription in
March of that year. The conscription law introduced the name Wehrmacht, thus
this can be seen as the founding date with the existence of the Wehrmacht
being officially announced on the 15th October 1935.
During 1935 until
1945 it's believed that up to 18.2 million served in the Wehrmacht. This represents
the total number of people who ever served, not the force strength. Around
2.3 million soldiers died in combat, 550 000 died from non-combat causes,
2.0 million missing in action and around 459 000 POW deaths.
