MILITARY AVIATION
The Second World War saw military aviation coming into its own - air power had moved beyond the novelty role of WWI. With increased performance, range and payload capabilities, air power had become a striking force for the combatant nations.

THE AIR FORCE'S ROLE
During the course of the war air power was given a number of distinctive roles.

Strategic bombing; the targeting of civilian, military and any thing that may help counter the enemies war capabilities.

Tactical air support;providing cover to the forces on the ground as well as reconnaissance and the escorting of bombers.

Transport; this was invaluable to all sides for the maintaining of supplies and communications for ground troops.

Naval aviation; this combined with the aircraft carrier provided a great strategic advantage. It allowed the movement of air power without the necessities of land bases or overnight flights and soon proved to be the main strength of naval fleets.
